Then, this month, word came out that the space — or part of it, according to a spokesman for the owners — would be filled by an outpost of the Qdoba burrito chain.
Alexandra McGrath, who had stopped in over the years, was one who was surprised to see the Figaro gone — though in retrospect she said that when she was last there, in March, it had seemed emptier than usual. The owner of the space, at Bleecker Street, is a limited liability corporation called Valley Stream Associates, which bought it in from Ben Fishbein, who reopened the cafe in after a years-long hiatus.
As of this writing, the permits for new Qdoba signage have not been approved. Still, the best way to remember the Figaro might be to look at some old pictures. Just another nail in the coffin of that area, which is being dismantled slowly by yuppies and large corporations. None of them were known for their food, but they were all good inexpensive spots to sit and watch the Village go by.
None of them had the habit of chasing off people who would nurse a cup of coffee for two hours either. All four of the ones I grew up with are gone. So, sadly, Bleecker street is having the soul drained out of it and is being invaded by characterless big corporations. My impression was that the waitstaff were always in a hurry to give you a check even if you were the only customer…maybe afraid that someone famous was about to walk in and be shamed by your presence.
But oddly enough, I was walking across Bleeker just yesterday afternoon on the way home from work past places with Villagey names like the Urban Timberjack. Not on topic, but good to see you back Dan!
Good post. Thanks for linking to my old pictures. I only wish I had taken more, had I known then that forty years later it would all but disappear. But just wait. Gosh, thanks very much Tracy, and I did curtail my blogging for awhile there… got sidetracked by some other stuff.
