Jiraiya traps the Animal Path with his Barrier: Toad Gourd Prison technique and strikes it with his Rasengan, knocking it into stomach acid. Jiraiya is stabbed in the arm and chest by the Path before it dies. Jiraiya realizes he is dying when his throat is crushed and his heart begins to fail. He reflects on his life, including being spurned by Tsunade and not dying a beautiful death like the Hokages the Third and Fourth.
Jiraiya says that like his master, he cannot give up since Naruto never gave up because it was his ninja way. Tsunade sits on a cliff in Konoha, observing a river and seeing a frog. The episode is called Somber News and it covers chapters , , , and 0f Naruto Manga.
Later in the episode, Naruto is awoken in the village by Kakashi, who informs him that Tsunade has summoned him. During their conversation, Fukasaku refers to Jiraiya as a boy which Naruto is offended by and the toad finds it amusing that Naruto refers to Jiraiya as a pervy sage.
Fukasaku, on the other hand, informs Naruto that Jiraiya died in his battle with Pain. Kakashi asks how Jiraiya died, and Naruto feels devastated and unable to respond. While the loss weighed deeply on Naruto, it did help him grow into an independent ninja with the ability to forgive others. Now, Kishimoto says Jiraiya's passing also helped Naruto relate to Sasuke on a brand-new level, so it's up to fans to decide whether the price was worth paying.

One by one, each of them succumbed to the power of the Jiraiya Sage Mode , forcing Nagato to move to the next level, invoke two new entities, but this time humans… Two other Pains.
From that moment on, Jiraiya found himself in a drastic situation. Waiting for the right moment, Jiraiya finally succeeded in putting Pain in his Genjutsu and preventing him to use further summoning techniques.
