In Project Insight, project management software , control accounts are called 'summary tasks. The decomposition of a schedule will continue at varying rates. As a project manager, the level of decomposition will be dependent on the extent to which you will need to manage.
Project Insight supports as many levels of hierarchy as are needed. The expectation is that each task will have a single owner and the owner is expected to manage and report on the work necessary to deliver the task. In Project Insight, this is called the 'task owner. Once all the deliverables of the project have been identified, tasks will be performed in order to create the deliverables. In some cases, these activities are the physical deliverables, but in other cases they are the actions that need to be performed.
A physical deliverable, for example, might be an image an actual file that is needed for the brochure. Listing out each of the tasks to be performed will result in an activity list as demonstrated below. The work package 'focus group' actually consists of three 3 separate tasks—'identify focus group targets,' 'prepare focus group objectives' and 'perform focus group.
I've been asked by clients in the past to develop a WBS, but I learned what they really wanted was a project schedule. They're not one and the same. A WBS is a logical decomposition breaking into smaller pieces and hierarchal representation of work needed to execute a project.
This decomposition of work is called a "work package. If additional visibility into the progress is needed, additional decomposition is recommended. A WBS doesn't have a time component, predecessors or dependencies. So why bother creating a WBS when you can create a project schedule instead? By developing a WBS, one can focus on the deliverables and nothing but the deliverables.
It allows an uncluttered focus on the work that often gets lost in a project schedule whose focus is time and dependencies. The project schedule is one of my favorite tools because it really gives a clear view of what's happening when, as well as how long the project will take.
It's the tool that communicates the work that needs to be performed, the resources performing the work and the time frame in which that work needs to be performed. It lists all of the tasks to complete the project and shows the dependencies between each task. Its main purpose is to show the timeline, including start and end dates for each task, and assign project team members to each task. This becomes an invaluable checklist to help keep things on track.
Project schedules are often created using project management software tools such as Microsoft Project , Open Workbench or Primavera. This information is described in the WBS Dictionary. When the project management plan is approved, scope is known, but not necessarily all of the details. It is understood that as details are defined, the Planning Packages eventually evolve to Work Packages. In the House Project, the project manager knows that the house will have fixtures, but at the time construction begins, there is only a fixture allowance and no fixtures identified.
Once the fixtures are determined, the associated Planning Package becomes a Work Package. This is accomplished by defining Control Accounts.
In the House Project, the project manager decides that the project risks associated with using subcontractors can be better managed if the project reports performance for each subcontractor. To monitor their performance, Elements 3. However, the remaining work in Elements 1. To assist with the monitoring and reporting, project management information tools are used to collect, analyze and report information at any Element within the WBS.
