On November 14, Gabi found out she was pregnant with her gay ex-boyfriend Will Horton 's baby. Nick agreed with Gabi and Will that he would raise the child, and that he and Gabi would get married. Nick and Gabi had a church wedding, but before they could be pronounced husband and wife, Chad objected, saying that Nick was not the father of Gabi's baby, and it finally came out that Will was the father. At a later date, Nick blackmailed Will to give up his parental rights to Gabi's baby, by threatening to tell that Will was the one who shot EJ.
Nick and Gabi married in a private ceremony. Only later did Gabi learn that Will gave up rights to the baby, but she did not learn about the blackmail, though Will tells her he did not want to do it. Nick had memories of something terrible that happened in jail, possibly involving another inmate, Vargas, who was recently released and getting help from the church to adjust to regular life.
The terrible thing is later revealed to be repeated prison rape by another inmate named Jensen. Nick was kidnapped, along with Gabi, and held hostage by Jensen.
Will and Sonny saved them, with Will getting shot in the process. Nick then tried to make things right, considering that Will almost died to save him, and agreed to have Will's name on Arianna's birth certificate.
Nick told Gabi the truth about his rape and about blackmailing Will. Nick was fired by Kate in June In August , when his parole was up, he was told to vacate the Kiriakis mansion immediately by Victor Kiriakis. Nick became obsessed with Gabi and got her a modeling job in New York, where he would be as well, hoping that they could be together. After Gabi yelled at him for interfering in her life, he followed her to the park where he tried to rape her.
Gabi hit him in the head with a rock and Sami and Kate helped her drag Nick's body to the river where he briefly awoke before apparently drowning on November On January 24, , Nick arrived at Gabi and Will's daughter's baptism revealing that he had not drowned.
He appeared reformed but soon blackmailed Kate into hiring him. Nick also manipulated Gabi into giving him another chance, and she felt that she must do so or risk going to jail for trying to murder Nick.
Later, Nick got involved in a custody agreement of Will and Gabi's daughter Ari, pushing Gabi to only let Will see his daughter at times she allowed it. Will and Sonny felt that Nick would manipulate Gabi for as long until he had Gabi and Ari to himself.
In the meanwhile, EJ DiMera found out that some one had pictures of him and Abigail Deveraux kissing sent to his house. EJ and Abigail later found out that Nick was behind it. Nick feared his plans to keep Will out of the baby's life would fall apart, but then he overheard Will arguing with his father Lucas Horton. Lucas said he took the blame and went to prison for Will. Nick did some investigating and found out way back in that Will had been the one shot EJ in the back, and not Lucas.
Nick discovered the police still had the evidence, and hatched a plan. He had papers drawn up, and waited until Gabi got into an argument with Sami and had labor pains. Nick used Sami's temper as the excuse even though Kayla said it had been the pains had been caused dehydration, and presented the papers and to Will. Nick told Will what he knew, and reminded him that he would also take Lucas, Hope Brady , Roman Brady and others who knew the truth and covered it up.
Lucas, Sami, E. J, and Sonny tried to get Will not to sign over his rights to Nick, but Will reluctantly signed the papers. Nick asked Gabi to marry him, and they were married two days later in the Horton living.
Sami and Sonny broke into Nick's room to destroy the evidence he had against Will. They and stole some of his USB drives, and while searching through the drives with E. The file contained the formula to a new anti-aging product that Mad World was launching. Nick finally admitted that his real problem was that Will was gay and that he didn't think he should be a father.
Nick also claimed that the baby would be better off it Will and his whole family would stay away, which crushed Will. Nick set about planning his happy life with Gabi and her baby, but Nick's former cell mate, Vargas, was released on March 15, Vargas and Nick had made a deal in prison and Vargas was ready to collect on that deal.
Nick worked some scheme that turned a small amount of money into a large amount of money for Vargas in a short amount of time. Nick never told Gabi about what happened, nor about the enemies he had made in prison. When Gabi was nine months pregnant, one of Nick's prison mates, Jensen, was released on a technicality. Jensen went right after Nick, but he mistook Rafe for Nick and brutally beat Rafe with a pipe, leaving Rafe in a coma.
Gabi was crushed. But Jensen wasn't done. Jensen kidnapped them both and took them to an warehouse on Smith Island where he tied them up and pulled a gun on them. Will and Sonny had witnessed the confrontation and followed the three of them to the cabin. Will and Sonny were able to rescue Gabi. Sonny left with Gabi while Will stayed behind to untie Nick.
Nick told Will to leave him, but Will kept trying to rescue Nick. When Jensen returned to the cabin, Will hid and heard Jensen confess to raping Nick in prison. When Jensen pulled a gun on Nick, Will jumped out and whacked Jensen with a wrench. Jensen and Will struggled, and the gun went off, injuring Will. Hope and the police arrived, and Hope fatally shot Jensen.
Will was taken to the hospital, and made it through surgery successfully, but Nick was far from recovered. Nick knew that he had to start telling people that he was raped in prison.
He told Maggie, then Gabi. When he told Gabi he also confessed that he tried to burry everything that had happened to him and use her and her baby to start a perfect life. While he did truly care about her, he wasn't honest with her about his intentions.

As he managed to solve her predicament, he started to get to know his relatives, the Horton's, better. What he hadn't expected was to meet the intriguing and troubled Chelsea Benson. She paid him little attention, regarding him as just another geek. Realizing his problem, Nick decided to take more desperate measures as he became smitten with her. Creating a false online identity, 'Dr. Shane Patton', he began an online correspondence with Chelsea and she began to fall for him.
She had no idea what he really looked like thanks to Nick's use of his creepy boss' photo in place of his own.
As he began to get closer to her in the real world, as Nick, he also became closer to her mother Billie. One night, when Billie fell off the wagon, a depressed Nick was at her side and quickly found his way into her bed. Both regretted this indiscretion and decided it was best to keep it from Chelsea. In an effort to further ingratiate himself with Chelsea, he helped her on her mission to bring money to Shawn and Belle while they were on the run from Philip.
During this venture, Nick was able to show off his talents as a 'geek James Bond' while they traveled through the exotic and treacherous Canadian terrain. When they returned to Salem from Toronto, Chelsea found herself reevaluating him and started thinking of him as 'more than a friend' material.
Unfortunately, Nick's secrets soon came out when Chelsea met the man who Nick had pretended to be, his boss. Disgusted with Nick, she went on a date with his boss only to have Nick save her from his predatory behavior.
She was still furious with him and, in a desperate attempt to prove how much he loved and respected her, he tried to tell her the truth about his rendezvous with her mother.

Willow found out and took advantage of this and demanded Nick pay her to keep quiet! When Nick met her on the beach one night to discuss this, they struggled when he refused to listen to her demands.
She fell and hit her head on a rock and died. Nick tried to revive her and Chelsea stood by him when he was cleared of any part in her death. He only suffered a concussion and temporary amnesia and then ran off to Vegas, wanting to find Chelsea, who was there, working.
He asked Chelsea to marry him and when she turned him down, he married some woman, China Lee.
